»With that said, this whole thing is part of a larger movement of art merchandise, in which the appeal of a commercial object is based on its design aesthetic first and foremost.«

Dot Dot Dash documents, as one of the first books, a new cultural phenomenon: the designer toy movement.
Since the beginning of the second millennium, designers and illustrators discovered the toy as a new and playful item for their creativity. On the face of it, the development is pretty interesting. The toy used to be a mass product, coming in thousands and millions. By applying the rules of the art world to the production of a toy, it becomes a limited piece of art itself. Thereby and with the rise of the low-brow art scene, a whole new infrastructure consisting of exclusive shops and galleries dedicated to these artistic objects was established.
Following the concept of the pictoplasma series at gestalten, the book displays the large variety of shapes and forms of designer toys and includes additional texts and essays on this phenomenon.
